Common questions
Answers.
How many CPD hours does CPA Ontario require?
+
CPA Ontario members must complete 20 hours of continuing professional development each calendar year, with at least 10 hours verifiable. Every 3-year rolling window must include at least 4 hours of ethics-focused CPD. Members log activities against their cycle in the CPA Ontario portal; missing the annual minimum triggers a compliance review at renewal.
What counts as verifiable CPD?
+
Verifiable CPD is any activity where you can produce evidence of attendance and content: registration confirmations, certificates of completion, agenda + presenter details, or an assessment result. Structured webinars, conferences, PD courses, teaching, publishing, and mentoring committees all typically qualify. Reading a journal on your own is unverifiable (still counts, but toward the unverifiable portion of your cycle target).
When does the CPA Alberta 3-year cycle reset?
+
CPA Alberta uses a rolling 3-year cycle rather than a fixed reset date. You must have 120 CPD hours across the current calendar year plus the two preceding, and no single year can drop below 20 hours. Because it rolls, the hours you logged 3 years ago drop off each January 1.
What are the LSO Law Society of Ontario CPD requirements?
+
LSO members complete 12 CPD hours per calendar year, all verifiable. Of the 12, at least 3 hours must be professionalism content (ethics, EDI, mental-health), and of those 3, at least 1 hour must be equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) content. Reports are due at the end of each calendar year.
How is this calculator different from what CPA Ontario or LSO gives me?
+
This calculator does two things a regulator portal will not: it shows real-time status across every Canadian regulator on one page (so a professional-services firm can track the whole team), and it flags when someone is behind pace before the cycle-end deadline forces a scramble. If you want firm-wide credential tracking with automatic hours-in-cycle alerts on your dashboard, that is what the Hibiscus HR paid product does.
